Tornado Plows Through Suburban Omaha, Causing Widespread Damage

Hundreds of Homes Damaged, Nearly 10,000 Without Power

Omaha, Nebraska (AP) - A powerful tornado ripped through suburban Omaha on Friday, causing widespread damage and leaving hundreds of homes without power. The storm was one of several that moved through Nebraska and Iowa on Friday, but it was the most destructive.

The tornado touched down in the northwest part of Omaha around 3:30 p.m. local time. It tore through a residential area, damaging homes and businesses. The storm also knocked down trees and power lines, leaving nearly 10,000 customers without power.

"It was like a freight train," said one resident who witnessed the tornado. "It just came out of nowhere and tore through our neighborhood." Another resident said, "I looked out my window and saw the tornado coming right at me. I ran to the basement and huddled with my family. It was terrifying."

The National Weather Service is still assessing the damage caused by the tornado, but it is likely that it will be in the millions of dollars.

Emergency crews are working to clean up the damage and restore power to the affected areas. The Red Cross has also set up shelters for those who have been displaced by the storm.
