New Zealand Earthquake: Civil Defence Monitors Potential Tsunami Risk

7.3 Magnitude Quake Hits Kermadec Islands, No Tsunami Threat

Civil Defence is currently assessing the situation following a 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck near the Kermadec Islands off the coast of New Zealand.

The quake, which struck at a depth of about 10 kilometers, occurred at 227am local time, according to the United States Geological Survey. It was initially reported as a 7.1 magnitude earthquake but has since been upgraded.

There is currently no tsunami threat to New Zealand, according to Civil Defence. However, the organization is monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary.

The Kermadec Islands are a group of small islands located about 1,000 kilometers northeast of New Zealand. They are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region that is known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
