Episode 1: The History of the Deep South

The Confederate States of America

The Deep South is a region of the United States that is often defined as the seven states that seceded from the Union to form the Confederate States of America (CSA) in 1861. These states were South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas.

The American Civil War

The CSA lasted for four years, during which time it fought the Union in the American Civil War. The war ended in 1865 with the defeat of the CSA. The states that had seceded were readmitted to the Union, but the scars of the war remained.

The Reconstruction Era

The Reconstruction Era was a period of time after the Civil War when the United States government tried to rebuild the South and reunite the country. This era lasted from 1865 to 1877. During this time, the South underwent a number of changes, including the abolition of slavery, the establishment of new governments, and the expansion of education and civil rights for African Americans.

The Jim Crow Era

The Jim Crow era was a period of time in the South when African Americans were subjected to segregation and discrimination. This era lasted from the end of Reconstruction until the 1960s. During this time, African Americans were denied basic rights, such as the right to vote, the right to serve on juries, and the right to access education and employment.

The Civil Rights Movement

The Civil Rights Movement was a period of time in the United States when African Americans fought for their civil rights. This movement lasted from the 1950s to the 1960s. During this time, African Americans organized protests, boycotts, and other forms of nonviolent resistance to fight for their rights.

The Deep South Today

The Deep South is a region of the United States that is still struggling with the legacy of slavery and segregation. However, the region has also made significant progress in recent years. African Americans have made gains in education, employment, and politics. The Deep South is now a vibrant and diverse region with a rich history and culture.
