Biden leads 2024 Democratic field with Sanders Buttigieg and Warren

Biden has a strong lead in polls, but Sanders and Buttigieg are gaining ground

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Vice President Joe Biden holds a commanding lead in the Democratic presidential primary, but Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg are gaining ground, according to a new poll released Tuesday. The poll, conducted by the Pew Research Center, found that Biden is the first choice of 32% of Democratic voters, followed by Sanders at 19% and Buttigieg at 16%. Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren is in fourth place with 15%, followed by California Sen. Kamala Harris at 7%. Biden's lead has been relatively stable in recent months, but Sanders and Buttigieg have made significant gains. Sanders has risen from 12% support in a Pew poll in June to 19% in the new poll, while Buttigieg has increased his support from 9% to 16%. The poll suggests that the Democratic primary is still very much up for grabs, and that Biden is not guaranteed the nomination. Sanders and Buttigieg are both popular with young voters, and they could make inroads with older voters as the campaign progresses. The poll was conducted among 1,503 adults, including 892 Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents, from Aug. 12-18. The margin of error for the poll is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
